FULL DAY – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK SAFARI FROM ARUSHA

FULL DAY – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK SAFARI FROM ARUSHA, Want to go to a park that a lot of people love? Well-known for having a lot of wildlife, that is. But guests don’t know about it as much… yet. Find out about the amazing animal groups in Tarangire National Park, which has the second-highest number of animals per square mile in Tanzania.

What do more than 3,000 elephants sound like? Or more than 700 lions? Did you know that over 250,000 animals move through Tarangire every year? Or that it is thought to be a great place to watch birds?

Even the plants in this unique park are beautiful to look at. For example, the baobab tree with its huge trunk and top of branches that reach to the sky is a stunning example.

Not many people visit this off-the-beaten-path area, but it has everything you could want. This unique environment won’t be as crowded as the big-name parks, so you’ll have it all to yourself. Does today sound like fun? Keep reading.

The Second Great Migration

The park gets its name from the Tarangire River, which flows through the area and brings life to everything in it. During the dry season, which lasts from June to October, huge groups of wildebeests, hartebeests, gazelles, zebras, giraffes, lions, leopards, and African wild dogs are drawn to the water for food. This makes for great animal watching.

Elephant herds of up to 300 animals meet at the river to eat and look for more water in underground streams.

Bird watching in Tarangire

Tarangire isn’t completely dry, though. The park has wetlands and green marshes that are home to over 550 kinds of birds. Crows, guinea fowl, steppe eagles, brown parrots, crested francolins, vultures, Kori bustards, love birds, bee-eaters, and the white-bellied go-away bird are some of the birds you might see.

The hills and forests of Tarangire are also home to plovers, eagles, ostriches, and ashy starlings, which all need places to nest. There are a lot of birds all year, but the best time to see them is during their migration, which lasts from November to April.

The One of a Kind and Strange

We’ve already talked about the park’s impressively large baobab tree, which is also known as “The Tree of Life” because its huge trunk can hold hundreds of gallons of water and these trees can live up to 600 years. Its seeds are tasty, and the elephants in the park use the rough tips of its tough bark to sharpen their tusks.

Strange things that happen in Tarangire have also caused the big hills that rise from the park’s fields. As you might guess, these are huge termite mounds. They were built by some of the tiniest animals in the area and fit right in with the natural order here. When the termites leave the mounds, the dwarf mongoose takes them over and fixes them up the way they like it. This is one of nature’s most harmonious shows.
