A Day with the Dolphins
A Day with the Dolphins, Safaris in Africa are more than just seeing lions, leopards, and elephants. You can watch and even swim with groups of friendly dolphins along Kenya’s beautiful coast and in its colorful marine parks.
We have planned a full-day trip for you on a real dhow that will take you sailing on the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. You will see historic fishing towns, beautiful islands, a seafood barbecue, and lots of swimming and snorkeling by coral reefs and iridescent fish. You will also get to spend a lot of time with dolphins.
Our trip starts in the small fishing town of Shimoni, which is near the ruins of a British colony and other historical sites. We’ll get on our dhow and set sail for Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park. On the way, we’ll pass by some small islands. As we sail through the blue water, keep an eye out for groups of dolphins jumping up and down next to our boat to welcome us to this beautiful marine reserve.
We can swim or kayak by the park’s long coral barrier reef, which is home to many different kinds of fish. This environment under the sea is home to octopus, clams, sponges, and dozens of different kinds of corrals.

You might swim with turtles, and keep an eye out for humpback whales that come through these waters on their way to and from the north.
But you came to see the dolphins, and the park is home to more than 200 of these smart and beautiful whales and dolphins. There are three beautiful types of dolphins in Kisite Mpunguti: the spinner, the bottlenose, and the humpback. You are sure to enjoy being with each other.
Safaris in Kenya’s Wasini Island
Once we’re back on our dhow, we’ll sail to nearby Wasini Island, which is a small cultural paradise where neither cars nor bikes are okay. You can only get around here on foot or in a wheelbarrow. We’ll go on a short tour of the island with a guide and see mangrove swamps, coral gardens, and maybe even dolphins and whales swimming nearby.
However, all of this fun, discovery, and thrill can only lead to one thing: lunch!
Enjoy the laid-back island vibe while you eat local Swahili fish at a bar-b-que.
We will get back on our dhow and look for the bright, jumping dolphins as we head back to Shimoni Island to find more things. As you walk down the ancient streets of town, you might smell cloves and hear the call to prayer in the evening.
We will go to the famous slave caves, where many sad people were kept before being sent to Zanzibar to be sold as slaves. You will be shown around the caves by a guide. The money raised from this community project helps pay for things like food, medicine, and teacher fees in the area.
