Discover Mombasa Half Day Tour
We will also visit the historic Fort Jesus as part of this busy, sensory trip. This building is a reminder of how Mombasa has been ruled by many different countries over the centuries. We will also visit Akamba Handicraft, which is one of the biggest places in Kenya that carves wood.
The Trouble at Fort Jesus
Although this building is very big and has thick, tall walls, it has been defeated nine times since it was built in 1631. Because whoever was in charge of Fort Jesus was in charge of the way from Africa to India. Different groups of Portuguese, Muslim, Swahili, and British soldiers fought to control the strong fortress and the trade lines in the Indian Ocean.
We will explore the grounds of the fort, which is now a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the colorful displays of warship parts, Omani weapons, jewelry, pottery, and other items.
Handicrafts by Akamba
Find a great trove of hand-carved masks, ornaments, sculptures, and other home decor items at this Mombasa-based cooperative. In the past fifty years, Akamba has grown from 300 artists to about 5,000 who make beautiful carvings of animals and people.
We will get a close look at how the carvings are made, from the plan to the rough shape to the fine details and finish. A great place to stop and pick up some unique gifts.
