Things to Do in Nairobi
You can get away to the wild with lions, leopards, and buffalo just minutes from the city’s busy downtown area. There are safe places for giraffes and baby elephants to live even in the city itself.
But Nairobi has all the fun things that come with living in a big city, like great restaurants, bars, and cultural sites. The well-known National Museum and the Karen Blixen Homestead are both here, showing off the wildlife and history of the area. There are lots of amazing things to do in Nairobi that will make your vacation one you will never forget.
Nairobi is known as “The Place of Cool Waters.”
Maasai people say “Enkare Nyirobi,” which means “Nairobi.” The word refers to the river that runs through the area. In 1899, the Uganda Railway opened a small town as an early stop. It quickly grew and became the capital of British East Africa. During British times, Nairobi was a center for business in the coffee, tea, and sisal industries.
The British were under a lot of pressure for years, but in 1963, Kenya got its independence. The city of Nairobi, which was doing well at the time, became the capital of the new Kenyan country.
When you land at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, you’ll find a world-class city with over 100 foreign companies and thousands of businesses. The UN is also very present here; its Environment Program and the UN Office at Nairobi are both based in this city.
Nairobi has one of the biggest stock exchanges in Africa, and the city is getting close to 5 million people.
This lively capital city is also the main entry point for safaris in East Africa. Safari Trips to Kenya is happy to call Nairobi home.
The best places for tourists to visit in Nairobi to do things
Kenya’s Nairobi National Park – One of Kenya’s oldest game parks is just minutes from your hotel. You can see lions, cheetahs, hyenas, rhinos, zebras, ostriches, giraffes, and more, all framed by buildings in downtown. Over 400 kinds of birds live in this one-of-a-kind wildlife park.
The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a famous non-profit organization in Nairobi Park that takes in and raises baby elephants and black rhinos that have been abandoned. If you want to see the babies being fed with big bottles in the morning, you should watch them run to their hands. The next step is playtime and mud baths!
Giraffe Center: Would you like to meet a big giraffe up close? This is a refuge for endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. You can watch the long-legged animals run around the grounds or maybe climb up on the feeding platform to give them a food pellet. A long, green giraffe tongue will answer, and maybe it will even kiss you back!
Karen Blixen Farmhouse & Museum: This is the home and farm of the famous author Karen Blixen, who wrote “Out of Africa” under the name Isak Dinesen. The house she lived in is now a museum with things from her life and from the movie version of her book. Have fun in the beautiful parks and grounds.
Kazuri Pottery and Beads Center – The center is an amazing ode to persistence and artistic expression. It’s a workshop where single moms make colorful beads and pottery that they sell on the spot. The project shows how self-reliant people can be and the best of the Kenyan spirit.
Bomas of Kenya: Bomas are villages, and this culture center shows off different kinds, each built in the style of one of Kenya’s main tribal groups. But that’s only the start of this exciting adventure. Folk music and dances from around the world are performed here, such as Swahili taarab music, Kalenjin warrior dances, and Embu drumming.
National Museum: The Birds of East Africa, the Great Hall of Mammals, and the Cradle of Humankind are just a few of the bright and impressive displays in this large and interesting museum. There are also displays about Kenyan history and traditional items that show off the country’s tribes and ethnic groups. All of this is kept in a large building that stands on lush grounds.
Tell me, how is the weather in Nairobi?
Because it is close to the equator and 1,795 meters (5,889 feet) above sea level, Nairobi has a moderate temperature all year. During the day, it’s warm (240 C or 750 F), but in the nights, it can get cool (100 C or 500 F) in June and July.
There are two types of seasons: dry and wet. Even though there are two wet seasons, the rain is not too heavy.
Since it is so close to the equator, there isn’t much difference between the seasons, and the times of sunrise and sunset don’t change much from year to year.
